The Year of the AWD Sedan
By Jakob Hansen, 7/24/2019
Everyone thinks that SUV's are so great, but you and I both know the secret. AWD sedans are what make the world go round.
Hello out there! You, yes you! You sly fox you. You’ve been avoiding SUV’s all this time, and it’s finally paid off! You are the reason we still get cool cars! For that I thank you. “What could this guy possibly be talking about?” you ask as you continue to read. Well, let me tell you. There are more all-wheel drive sedans available right now than ever before. That is something to be proud of. Give yourself a hand! That’s right, right now you can buy a regular four-door sedan that puts power to all four wheels, and there are more than ever. At any time right now, you could walk into almost any manufactures dealer and buy an AWD sedan. So what manufacturers have sedans available right now? Let's run down the list and see what we have to offer.
Ford may slowly be killing off their sedans one by one, but we still have some time left with them yet. The Ford Fusion and Ford Taurus have been available for some time with AWD, veterans in the game if you will. The two Ford sedans don’t have much time left, in this country at least, so snatch them up with some great discounts while you can.
With Ford of course comes Lincoln. Currently, Lincoln has only two sedans available at the moment, both of which offer AWD. The Lincoln MKZ and the Lincoln Continental are gorgeous luxury sedans that still follow the old hommage that luxury is comfort. Many of the other luxury brands have forgotten that that’s how it's done.
Buick has AWD available on all of its current sedans. The Regal Sportback and Regal TourX have a fantastic AWD system, and bonus, Regal TourX is a wagon! The Buick LaCrosse also comes available with AWD, making is a viable full-size luxury sedan with AWD.
Same as Buick, all current Cadillac sedans offer AWD. The ATS and CTS are both going away here shorty, slotted to be replaced with the CT4 and CT5, but all send power to all four wheels. The CT6, Cadillac’s full-size sedan also offers AWD. I almost forgot! The XTS is still around, and still offers AWD as well!
Since Chrysler only offers one sedan at this time, there isn't much to go off of here. However, the Chrysler 300 does have AWD available!
Now Dodge is an interesting one, with all the crazy 707 horsepower beasts that they have roaming around on these streets, they also have calm collected sedans with AWD and a reliable V6. The Dodge Charger has so many drivetrains and engine options it's hard to not find the right one for you. And it may not be a sedan, but the AWD Challenger deserves a shout out. AWD muscle car, can it get any cooler?
Kia previously would not have been included on this list, but now, oh boy, now they have quite the offering. The Kia Stinger is an AWD, twin-turbo, 365 horsepower, sportback sedan. Kia’s new push into the sport sedan market has proved to be quite successful, and got them onto this very prestigious list!
Hyundai’s luxury brand, Genesis, is offering some amazing vehicles for a great value. Aimed directly at the German brands, the Genesis G70, G80, and G90 are competing with the best, and doing quite well at it. RWD drove based platforms with AWD availability make them true luxury sport sedan competitors.
Subaru is the king of AWD. Every Subaru model comes standard with AWD (except the BRZ which is a rear-wheel drive sports coupe). Compared to the competition, the Impreza, WRX, and Legacy all have a lower starting price, making them an excellent entry-level AWD sedan.
At first look, Toyota appears to not offer any AWD sedans. The Corolla, Camry, and Avalon are all FWD only vehicles. But look a little harder, and you’ll see that the Toyota Prius of all vehicles has an available AWD drivetrain. Not many models available today are available as an AWD hybrid vehicle. An accomplishment in its own right. The Toyota Sienna also deserves a shout out, as it’s the only AWD mini-van available.
Lexus is another one of the brands that are entirely changing focus. Once purely focused on reliable luxury, Lexas has been aiming squarely at the sports luxury market. The IS and ES are solid sport sedans and the GS is a beautifully crafted full-size car. All of their models are offered with an AWD drivetrain.
Nissan is new to the AWD sedan world. The new Nissan Altima comes available with AWD and is competing nicely with some of the established AWD sedans such as Subaru. The Altima is a large and well-equipped mid-size sedan that has attracted new crowds with its AWD platform.
Mazda was once a sporty economy brand with fairly reliable and sporty cars. Now, however, they have become a pseudo-luxury brand with interiors that compete with some of the best in the business. New to the table is an AWD Mazda 3, their smallest vehicle available. With AWD available on this sporty little sedan/hatchback, it places it in a class all on its own.
Volkswagen has a long history of AWD vehicles. 4Motion, Volkswagens AWD system, is available on both SUV and sedans alike. The all-new Arteon, Golf Alltrack, Golf R, and Golf Sportwagen, all offer AWD right now. While only one of those vehicles is a true “sedan”, the wagons and hatchbacks deserve shoutouts.
Quattro. The AWD system that took Group B by force and took the world by surprise. Audi continues to be a world leader for AWD systems, however, the separation between Audi and their competitors has seemed to shrink. ALL Audi models are available with AWD, including the A3, A4, A5, A6, A7, and A8.
Mercedes-Benz always makes sure they have every option available to every customer. Right now, AWD is available on every Mercedes car. The A Class, CLA, C Class, E Class, CLS, S Class, and AMG GT all are able to send power to all four wheels.
The ultimate driving machine. BMW may have veered away from their old marketing slogan, but their cars still represent the same ethos. BMW sedans have always been RWD biases, but now the 2, 3, 5, 6, and 7 Series all offer an AWD drivetrain as well.
Volvo’s focus on safety and luxury means that their vehicles have to be able to grip the road in any condition. All the current offerings from Volvo are available with AWD. The S60, V60, S90, and V90 are all AWD compatible.
Jaguar has always been an intriguing brand. They offer a sport luxury car sedan that gives customers something that's a little different than the other brands. The good thing, AWD is offered on all three models, XE, XF, and XJ.
As much as everyone is moving to SUV’s, sedans are still an important part of the automotive industry. People like you have kept sedans alive and make it so that manufacturers aren’t afraid to produce amazing cars that are able to handle all weather. We are lucky to have these cars available, let's band together and show the manufacturers that there are still customers out there for a good solid AWD sedan!
